Good News Story - Best Lives
We always like to highlight positive news stories – particularly if they are from our industries. So, we are very happy to highlight Best Lives - an organisation that provides employment support for people with diverse abilities and employers.
Best Lives Property Care is a gardening and maintenance service which was established over 20 years ago.
The primary purpose of Property Care is to offer employment opportunities to people with disabilities who require more on-the-job support than those in open employment. Unlike other regions, Northam and surrounding Wheatbelt towns do not have the benefit of Australian Disability Enterprises, which typically provide such support.
Their Property Care team includes nine people with varying disabilities who are employed to work alongside their Best Lives supervisors at numerous locations in and around Northam. There are five dedicated supervisors with horticultural expertise to ensure that the gardeners continually acquire new skills while delivering valuable services to the community.
The benefits of the amazing work done by the team is evident as Best Lives consistently secures tenders from various government departments including TAFE, Muresk Institute, DPRID, and other businesses and organisations such as Aboriginal Health Services, Glen Roy Chaff and Northam Glass. They even undertake smaller jobs for local families.
Many of the Property Care Gardeners stay with us for years because they draw a deep passion and purpose from their work. Several long-serving team members have tenures ranging from 1 to 16 years.
Meet Russell!
For more than 12 years, Russell has been a valued member of the Property Care team. Known for his friendly nature and willingness to help others, especially new staff, he has built strong friendships with many of his colleagues.
Russell takes pride in his work, particularly his skill with a whipper snipper and ride-on mower, which is his favourite piece of gardening equipment.
After completing work experience at a local butcher during high school, Russell joined the Best Lives Property Care team and has remained there ever since. He enjoys learning new skills and hopes to complete a small engines and mechanical course in the future.
Russell loves being outdoors. Outside of work, he enjoys karaoke, camping, live music, travelling, church bible study, and spending time with friends. He is also working hard towards obtaining his driver's license.
With his humour, positivity and eagerness to learn, Russell makes a valued contribution to the team every day.
